about

Take three principal instruments.
Add three musicians and three forms of expression. Combine these ingredients with a threefold feeling of mutual understanding and copious amounts of musical empathy. Sit back, and listen as one creative unit successfully emerges.
Dusan Jevtovic, Tony Levin and Marko Djordjevic stand backlit against the studio lights. There is an air of anticipation and expectation that something special might occur.
And it does!
City Hustling captures the special moments and intuitive exchanges of brilliance which occur when highly talented musicians are given an opportunity to innovate experiment and improvise.
It's not often that the title 'power trio' is justified to a line-up of guitar, bass, and drums, but on this occasion the musicians featured on this release fully deserve that rather hackneyed description.
Over the course of the album, the players offer the listener the aural equivalent of a strident march through crowded pavements, a leisurely stroll in spacious shopping malls and a raucous in-your-face neon light, auditory and sensory experience.
The compositions have great depth and although there is no doubt that the inspiring invention of tracks such as Improv can present a challenge, everything about the release is ultimately a thoroughly rewarding experience.
The sequencing of the tracks works well; the sound quality is excellent. The recording is bright and because of its fine sonic qualities the music just comes alive.
One of the reasons why the album has such an impact, is probably down to the way it was recorded. It has a fresh, live quality and the players performance is bound together by a tangible connective and collective feeling.
Each player has an opportunity to express themselves. Every instrument and note (or series of notes) has something important to say and a story to tell. Every subtle twist and turn creates a melodic sub-plot within a chapter of connected ideas. Consequently, the use of space between the notes is used to brilliant effect.
This facet is exemplified to great effect in the distinctive beginning and powerful twisted tones of Blues. It’s a wonderful opening piece. Concussive riffs deliver a series of sensory blows and explosive guitar parts full of menace and distortion play a belligerent part.
The rhythm section works extremely well; they hold things together and stir the pot with great aplomb. They consistently succeed with a succession of percussive backdrops, changing rhythms and deep-seated, growling bass lines. The dexterity of Marko Djordjevic is readily apparent in the superb percussive caresses and strokes that underpin many of the pieces.
The performance of Tony Levin is magnificent throughout. There is no doubt, that his gorgeous deep seated bass lines add an extra dimension to the music. His playing in tunes such as, Deep D and Do Da is superb.
The trio skilfully create tension using repeated phrases, rhythms, and themes. They resolve any feeling that you know where the music is going, by unexpectedly changing tact, or by changing the rhythm, or mood of the piece.
Several of the tunes convulse, puff and huff with spitting aggression. They are hot-blooded and surge with action. In their muscular approach, there is no requirement for airy-subtlety nor elegant melody to get in the way.
Changes in pace and volume are used to whip up and spray surging waves of sound in a powerful and sometimes disconcerting combination of insistent motifs and inventive innovation. Complex Avant sections hint at free expression.
Dusan Jevtovic’s jangly flourishes, are expertly laden with a flotsam of discordant and unusual effects. These break upon the shore shaken and stirred by unpredictable currents, yet are guided with great aplomb by a regular, reassuring swell, topped with exciting crests.
If you appreciate a powerful tide of shaking guitar effects, then Jevtovic’s piercing tones will win many plaudits for their beautifully-ugly discordance and dark-room malevolence
During the release, Jevtovic’s application of the right choice of tone, and the precise use of dynamics and volume, have just as important a part to play, as power and speed. His, layers, textures, and a wide variety of timbres; provide an intriguing mesh of woven sounds.
Levin’s inspiring bowed work in 5 against 2 provides it with a mysterious, spacious feel. In this piece, the yowl of the bow is perfectly complemented by Jevtovic’s abrasive and gruff palette of sounds
The trio’s courage to be different, combined with a willingness to explore new ways of expression sets the music apart. Innovation, and improvisation are lofty goals, and when they bear fruit, as they do in tunes like Deep D, the results can be remarkable and memorable.
Indeed, City Hustling is quite special. It ticks all the right boxes; is full of clever invention, inspiring playing and exudes an air of immeasurable spontaneity.
Dusan Jevtovic, Tony Levin and Marko Djordjevic have created a wonderful album.
I hope you enjoy the experience! I certainly did!

about

Dusan Jevtovic Barcelona, Spain

Dusan Jevtovic is a guitar hero for those with little patience for the cliché histrionics that have come to define the field. While most ultra practitioners continually punctuate bold statements with speed and excess, Dusan tickles the ears with an overabundance of surprises and restraint.
